Time Attack is a race series devoted to showcasing the tuning aftermarket, providing a relevant motorsport interest for those within the scene. The basic premise is to race modified versions of road cars against one another and against the clock, and this is a formula that has been wholeheartedly embraced by certain tuning companies, creating big-budget racers to advertise their modifying prowess.
Take Dutch company DBM Engineering, for example. They've built this incredible E36 BMW M3 GT-R for the series, and have no doubt flogged a load of coilovers, chips and exhausts to the public off the back of its success.
It was built for owner Dirk Bonder, and took about a year and a half to complete. The vastly swollen arches accommodate a widened track, while the obligatory FIA-approved rollcage fulfils safety requirements. Power comes, somewhat unexpectedly, not from a BMW engine, but an RB26. For the uninitiated, this is a turbocharged 2.6-litre straight-six Nissan engine usually found in the R34 Skyline. Some of the chassis components and running gear are Nissan too, including the rear subframe, which highlights the inherent ingenuity of the race series as a whole: all marques are welcome, and it's positively encouraged to mix and match in the pursuit of speed.
Of course, they could have just used a Skyline and saved themselves all the hassle. But that's not the spirit, is it?
