The rally paddock of the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed was, as ever, stuffed with a vast and eclectic selection of exciting cars of all ages. Let's focus today on three of the most recognisable and desirable rally heroes: a mkI Escort, and two mkIIs.
This mkI was built for the Safari Rally of 1971, and was also taken to second place in the Arctic Rally by Timo Mäkinen. In 1974, Billy Coleman entered it in the British Championship and went on to win. It still campaigns today in the same 1974 spec.
LAR 801P is an RS1800, built in 1975. This one was also raced by Timo Mäkinen - he won the '75 RAC Rally in it.
DKP 191T is a 1979-built RS1800, bearing one of the most famous (and certainly one of the most copied) Escort liveries: the Rothmans colours. Ari Vatanen drove this car in the 1981 World Championship, winning in Finland and Greece. Despite fierce competition from the revolutionary new Audis, Vatanen still became World Champion.
