RAF Thurleigh - scrappage scheme graveyard

Bedford's RAF Thurleigh was established in 1941 for RAF Bomber Command, and was transferred to the USAF the following year for heavy bombing raids on Nazi Germany. It doesn't get a lot of use these days, though. Well, not for aviation purposes, anyway.

Looks quite unassuming, doesn't it? Derelict, even.

But what's that you can see out of the window...?

That's right - it's the remnants of the ill-fated scrappage scheme. That worked well, then.

Most of these cars are just sitting there complete with their keys and documentation, waiting for something to happen. Will it be the crusher? Will it be parts vultures or ringers? Who knows...

You can find out more here.
