Sir Stirling Moss always said that he'd retire from racing as soon as he stopped enjoying it and, at the age of 81, he's reached that point. Stepping from his car after qualifying for the Le Mans Legends on Saturday, he said that it was the first time he'd been scared driving a car, and for that reason he would be retiring.
...but this isn't something to be sad about; it's something to celebrate. Often called 'the greatest driver never to win a World Championship', his CV includes Formula One, Le Mans, Sebring, the Monte Carlo rally, the Mille Miglia... as versatile as he is unique, we now get to observe a gentleman driver happily entering retirement on his own terms. Because, of course, motorsport wasn't always as safe as it is now. Stirling's ambling into the sunset with his head held high.
